Chapter 14

Two Men Down?

Ira

When Ira was three, her grandfather died. When she was five, one of her brothers was in a car accident. He didn't die but he came close. Three months before she went to DeadEnd, her favorite bunny died.

She'd never been truly affected by loss. Although she'd been attached to some people at DeadEnd, she always knew they'd be leaving. And so there had always been that little bit of hesitation in her to truly and deeply care about somebody.

Reth, Len, and Mal she had allowed herself to get closest to. They had the oldest four doors; the ones that had been there the longest. The fairy tales that had killed many fixers before them.

There was sort of a happy ending, knowing that she'd be leaving on the same day that her three best friends would be. And so it hadn't really felt like a loss. They'd all be walking into a new world with countless endless perils. That they’d be too busy and wouldn't have time to truly mourn over those who had left.

Watching Pan kill Big Pole seemed to somehow further numb her to the idea that those around her could be taken from her. Her life seemed to be full of impermanent figures. And especially with Pan around who thought he could play God and decide who lived and who died, she thought that she had protected herself and given herself the ability to say goodbye when needed.

But the absolute crippling agony of knowing Nev was not going to wake up, was not going to touch her again, or smile at her, or kiss her, or make love to her ever again - it was the worst thing she had ever felt in her entire life.

She watched Shade step out of the house and disappear into the night and Ira tried desperately to catch her breath. But when she started to turn, the glint of the knife in Pan’s hand made her tense again.

“Will you please put that away?” she said.

Pan wasn't looking at her, he was staring at Nev. She wasn't sure if he had even heard her or if she had even said it out loud.

But then Pan took a breath and sheathed the knife in his belt. He rubbed his face before dropping into a chair with his elbows on his knees, he covered his face in his hands, watching Nev through his fingers.

It looked like the most vulnerable position she'd ever seen him in. And even then, besides his eyes, he had closed off everything else.

Ira took a breath and turned back to look at Nev. His color was fading and he was visibly shaking. Trembling. His eyes weren't quite open. Bonecollector had cut off all of his clothes just so he could see how deep the wound was and how far the black toxin was spreading through his body. She could see it as if it was moving through channels in him. Like a spider web. Or cracked glass.

Bonecollector remained sitting on Nev’s right side.
